EMPATHY

Although trauma is a shared cross-cultural experience of wounding, there are still limitations to empathy. One particular challenge is to empathize with the tragic experiences of those who are physically far away and/or grounded in different cultures or nationalities. In such cases, imagining the pain and suffering of others would require a large degree of imaginative capacity and flexibility. However, we can develop our capacity for sympathetic understanding through active listening, which entails being well-informed about others' circumstances without any judgment, bias, or prejudice

The EMPATHY intervention took place at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, using its bustling dynamics as a metaphor for daily life. In the mundane routine of everyday life, people often overlook the struggles of others. The artist deliberately avoided using Ukrainian national symbols to initiate a dialogue, emphasizing the intricate nature of empathy, which requires active effort from each of us. The public had the opportunity to ask questions about Ukraine and listen to personal experiences shared by Ukrainians, creating a moment for thoughtful dialogue and understanding
